To prepare coco coir for use as a growing medium, it is important to properly rinse and soak it before planting. This will help to remove any salt or other contaminants that may be present, as well as help to hydrate the fibers. To rinse the coco coir, place it in a container and cover it with water. Agitate the coir to help loosen any dirt or debris, then drain the water and repeat the process until the water runs clear.
Once the coco coir has been rinsed, it can be soaked in a nutrient solution to further hydrate the fibers and begin to introduce nutrients to the growing medium. To do this, mix a balanced nutrient solution according to the manufacturer’s instructions and soak the coco coir in it for at least an hour. Reefertilizer Grow would be a good option for nutrients here. You will want to 1 scoop of Grow for every 4L of water.
After soaking, the coco coir is ready to be used as a growing medium. It can be used on its own, or it can be mixed with other materials such as perlite or vermiculite to create a more well-rounded growing medium.
